England won the third and final One Day International in India, defeating the hosts by five runs in Kolkata.
Although the series was out of reach, having lost the previous two ODI’s, it was a much-needed win for the touring England team, who had struggled up until that point. England had suffered a 4-0 loss in the Test series and did not want to walk away from the ODI series with another zero to their name. The win was only England’s fourth in 26 ODI games in India, which puts into perspective the importance of the result, despite the series already being over.
Ben Stokes was the man to thank for England, who banished memories of a torrid bowling spell at Eden Gardens during the World Twenty20 final, to take the wicket of Virat Kohli and end the 104-run partnership between Kedar Jadhav and Hardik Pandya. Stokes was also very useful with the bat, as he hit 57 runs in just 39 balls during England’s total of 321 for 8.
Next up for England, are three Twenty20 internationals against India, followed by three ODI’s in the West Indies. In the summer, England cricket fans can look forward to the ICC Champions Trophy, plus matches in all forms of the game against South Africa and the West Indies.
